New Items Added to My Etsy Store!

For those of you who haven’t been to my Etsy store “Once Upon a Hanger”, please take a look at some of the new items I have added. There are 25 for now but I am sure I will be adding more as time goes on. Some of my favorite pieces are…

This really great giraffe print boyfriend blazer! It is a size medium and is only $15.99. It would look great with a black dress and tights or a pair of skinny jeans! This would surely be a great conversation piece.

giraffeThis very regal wrap skirt that reminds me of Hermes or Gucci. The colors are incredible and it is one size fits most meaning you can adjust it to fit you! This could be worn in the winter with tights and boots or in the summer with a crispy white button down and wedges. Priced at $19.99 this is a true value as skirts this quality simply don’t exist for a low price point.

wrap skirt My favorite piece in the store is this black and gold sweater. The metallic flame like details are really special and would brighten up a dull winter day with a pair of skinny jeans or a lackluster night with a mini! It has front AND back detailing. A true find at $16.99. Size medium.

Post-Holiday Shopping Tips

I hope everyone had a very happy holiday and I hope that Santa was very good to you as well. I am sure that many of you got either money and/or gift cards from family and friends. I am sure you are excited to spend them, so here are some post-holiday shopping tips.

1. Beware of impulse buys- There are going to be stores trying to sell you as much as they can. Avoid what I call “register” purchases. A good example is at stores like H&M or Forever 21 that have very cute and cheap merchandise near the registers. It could be umbrellas, make-up, hair ties, etc. Ask yourself, “Do I really need these floral nail files?” Chances are you don’t. If you’re still not convinced, think about how these little purchases add up over time. If you spend an extra $5 at five different stores that’s $25 you could have had to buy a cute dress or top.

2. Make a list- Never go “blind shopping”. Go through your closet and think about what you have and what you could get to go with it. This expands your wardrobe. Before you purchase an item, check your list. Think about the pieces ability to match with other items.  Now I am not saying that certain items should be overlooked. If you see a sequined leopard top in regular leopard print or pink leopard print, ask yourself, “Which goes with more items in my closet?” Go with the regular print.

3. Beware of sales- Just because something is 80% off does not mean it is something you need. This is how we fill our closets with filler. It is often these items that we end up never wearing.

4. Look for inspiration- Pick up the latest fashion magazines or check out blogs online for some ideas if you are feeling uncertain as to what to buy.

5. Try everything on- I cannot say this enough. It is so important to never judge an item by how it looks on a hanger, a hanger does not have shape. Buy what fits you, not what you hope will fit in a few months.

Happy Shopping!

Holiday Gift Guide: Holiday Party Hostess

During my holiday visit with my family yesterday, my aunt gave me a really great present. When I got to thinking about it, it would make a great gift for the hostess of a Christmas party you may be attending this week or next weekend. It is simple, yet chic. If you are invited to a holiday party, take a hostess gift. While a bottle of wine may be nice, these colorful (or any colorful) napkins would be a fun yet inexpensive way to brighten up the party and your snacks too!

Holiday Gift Guide: The Little Ones

If any of you have children, nieces, nephews, cousins, or even the children of friends, you may be riddled as to what to get them for Christmas. There are so many toys out there today that are fancy and need way too many batteries. From my many years of babysitting I have noticed that children do like fancy toys, but they almost always like simple ones better.

Since this is a fashion blog I tried to find gifts that kept with my theme. I came across these sets on Fat Brain Toys and think that they are simple yet provide creativity for kids.

The first set is a Maggie Leigh Magnetic Dress Up Kit that is only $11.95. Her outfits can be mixed and matched and everything can be easily organized and stored in the box that comes with the set. Perfect for travel and for your budget!

Now for the boys, I am sure that some of you say that boys should not be exposed to any “girly” toys. Well, I have seen many a little boy play with his sister’s toys and turn out just fine. Guess what I used to play with? My brother’s Ninja Turtles, Transformers, Hess Trucks, and army men. I would dig up worms in the dirt and climb trees. I turned out just fine.

Therefore, I recommend this Magnetic Pretend Play Jack set for boys. He can be whatever sports star he chooses. So there it is… a doll for boys minus the stigma and for only $10.95

Holiday Gift Guide: Your Tech Savvy Friend

As our world progresses into the future, technology advances and we find ourselves becoming more dependent on our electronic devices. They can be smart phones, iPhones, iPads, or whatever else you may use. I personally think that in the fashion world, the iPad is a staple and necessity. It makes sense as most bloggers, editors, stylists, and designers use Mac desktops and laptops. So my pick for your “tech savvy” friend would be this Marc by Marc Jacobs iPad case that comes in five colors and is $48. (It fits both the iPad and iPad 2 so no worries.) If you don’t like this case their are many more out there.

Walk the Talk 2011

This past Saturday I attended the Walk the Talk Fashion Event in Philadelphia. I want to start out by thanking Rebecca of Can Ya Heel Me and Tweety of Young Hip & Chic for organizing the event as well as Angela Edmunds of Showroom 77 for hosting the event in her great space. It was a fantastic party with great food provided by Josette Cuisine. It proved to be a success as guests continued to arrive until the very end.

So now of course you want to see some pictures! I will admit that I didn’t take many (I was too busy talking!) but others did and they came out great.

The first image is from OpenSky’s blog. They are a really cool on-line company comprised of products which are chosen by stylish stars such as Molly Sims and designer Cynthia Rowley. They were one of the sponsors of the event and were kind enough to make sure we all got these Jane Marvel makeup bags as well as a $10 credit for the site. suasanne and i  Photo credit: OpenSky Blog

If you think that is where the goodies ended, you are wrong. I want to say thank you to Sole Society for giving away free shoes! I got this great pair of flats that I am in love with… (the slipper look is so in right now).

IMG_1619Just when I thought I was creative, Nina from House of Teiwiata on Etsy has created shoe clips! They are a fun way to add some color to your shoes and were free thanks to Nina!

Here’s a look at the shoe clips on a pair of my black pumps…

IMG_1629 All I want to say about the next item is that I never win anything… EVER. Until Walk the Talk. I was the oh so proud winner of a necklace from Just Fabulous. It is stunning in person.

IMG_1622I only ended up making one purchase for the day and that was from Mijourne Jewelry. They have some really awesome products and are super friendly! Check out this awesome necklace.

IMG_1639If you would like to see more pictures check out 528 Spoken Truth’s page dedicated to the event. Just two more to end my post!

Once again, I had a great time and am looking forward to the next event!

My First Shellac Manicure

Since I have my blogging event tomorrow I figured it was time to get a manicure, something that I haven’t had in a long time. I am pretty good at doing my own nails and try to save money that way but sometimes you just want to be pampered. I decided to try a gel manicure with CND Shellac. I chose the color Asphalt. I don’t really get caught up in nail polish color trends so I usually stick to a greige (gray/beige) or darker gray.

The great thing about shellac is that it lasts for 14 days and for some people, even longer. It does not damage nails and is a great alternative to acrylic nails, especially if your natural nails have the capability to grow long.

The salon experience I had was fantastic. Polished Salon has locations in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania as well as Hockessin and Wilmington, Delaware. Polished is a natural nails salon, see their motto below.

“Polished Salon provides a fun and new approach to healthy, natural nails in a safe, fume free environment.”

Holiday Gift Guide: The Girlfriend (or any female) Who Has Everything

We all know at least one… the girl who has everything. What does one get this girl? Well, I happen to think that any type of primping or pampering gift is a great idea. My aunt recently purchased this Smashbox makeup palette and has been raving about it. She paid $100 but they have a sick deal right now where you can get it for $45! Smashbox makeup is an extremely well-crafted product which makes this a total steal. It also gives your girl a chance to experiment as the palette comes with 45 shades of eye shadow, nine cream eye liners, three blushes, one bronzer, two soft lights (illuminating powders), six lip glosses, and four mini brushes.

The palette is organized into three types of looks for INDIE GLAM (bold, sexy shades), POP ICON (bright, playful hues) and MOD CHIC (polished, pretty colors). It doesn’t get any easier!

Holiday Gift Guide: Your Furry Friends

I think that during the holidays it is important to remember our furry, fuzzy, scaly, and even feathery friends. I myself have a guinea pig and know that I will be giving him a special treat this holiday. For those of you with larger pets it is easier to find more fashionable gifts such as this pet bed.

I am a huge fan of up-cycling and think it is a great way to reuse items that might otherwise end up in landfills. This suitcase bed would be perfect for a small dog or cat. It is $59 and available here.

Holiday Gift Guide: Your Boyfriend (FiancĂ©, Husband, etc.) Who Doesn’t Like Getting Dressed Up

This gift guide is for those of you who have boyfriends who don’t like getting dressed up. They don’t like shopping or picking out things to wear. This Christmas would be a good time to add a nice dress shirt to their wardrobe. They can be worn with dress pants, suits, or even jeans.

If you want to add some class to their wardrobe, I suggest a dress shirt from Express. They have a good variety of fits and colors so the choices are endless. The 1MX Modern Fit Stretch Cotton Shirt is my pick as it is a modern take on the classic dress shirt. They are currently $59.90 and if you buy one you get another for $19.90.

Holiday Gift Guide: A Gift for Your Friend Who Likes Fashion

For the next few weeks I will be doing blog posts on potential gifts for your family and friends. Today I will be covering your friend who loves all things fashionable. She or he loves to shop, cares about current fashion trends, and has an eye for all things stylish. I recently wrote an article for Meets Obsession on this item and felt that it should be shared with others as well.

Do you remember playing memory match as a kid? I know that I do and was beyond excited when I saw this game. That's right... it's Street Style Matching. For those of you who don't know, street style is a type of fashion photography done right on the streets of many American and international cities. As a photographer, you look for people who catch your eye and snap a photo of them in whatever they may be wearing. This style of photography has really taken over in the past few years, especially during fashion week. When it comes to dressing myself, I look to street style for inspiration. One of the best sites to check out is the god of street style himself, Scott Schuman, The Sartorialist.

Barbara Iweins, the photographer responsible for these pictures, is from Belgium. There are two versions of the game, one is available for purchase and the other for pre-order on Amazon for just over $10. This is perfect for those of you on a budget.

Happy Shopping!
